Spice Garden, Penang

Our last weekend was unexpectedly spent at a park where you can actually see a fruiting spice tree and learn about the spices and herbs which are virtually a necessity in our meals. With an entrée fee of RM 12 (for locals) we were given few drops of natural mosquito repellent oil made of ‘Serai Wangi – Lemongrass’ at the entry. There are two options available, either you can explore the park on your own or get a paid specialized guide to take you around. Specialized guide as in he will educate on the various usage and benefits of the spices and herbs, as well as the origin history of spices in Penang-straits settlement.
We decided to explore on our own and after a brief explanation of the trails by the guide..together with a printed map, we begin our stroll. So here we are… beautifully and neatly landscaped on a natural rain forest is Penang’sTropical Spice Garden nestling along Jalan Teluk Bahang in the west coast shoreline of Penang.  The moment we stepped in, we were enclosed by lush greeneries taken in by fresh air. Ponds, waterfalls, streams running beneath  wooden bridges, flora and fauna.. everything are so scenic, providing such a calm and restful  feeling. Even the path steps are creatively done. It is said there are over 500 species of flora and fauna available here.

There are 3 trails – Spice trail, Ornamental trail and Jungle trail. As we crossed the pond on the right from the entry way is the Spice trail. Walking along the spice terraces, one can see varieties of spice and herb plants and trees on both sides along with identification and explanation signage displayed individually.

Antique doors are used to create room like impressions. A very creative approach featuring different species plants

Ornamental trail is in the center of the valley with flowering plants, palms and shrubs along the trail where waterfall and giant swing are. Unfortunately the giant swing was under reconditioning hence visitors were not allowed to use it on that day.

Wild palms, palm oil and rubber trees and other tropical rainforest plants are what you witness at the Jungle trail that meanders all the way through to the Tree Monkey restaurant which overlook the  Teluk Bahang bay.
An hour leisure walk in the garden, head to Tree Monkey café on top of Lone Crag (follow the mapped trail, and this is the end) for a refreshment. An admirable view of Teluk Bahang bay awaits.
